In accordance with the North Carolina Local Government Budget & Fiscal Control Act, the Town prepares an annual balanced budget, which outlines the projected revenues and proposed expenditures for the year. The Town's fiscal year period is July through June. During the budget development process, the departments develop a budget request and submit it to the Finance Officer and Manager for initial review. Town staff work collaboratively to develop a draft budget for Mayor and Council discussion, during their budget workshops.
The annual budget is presented formally to the Council, during one of its regularly scheduled meetings. A public hearing is set for residents to comment on the proposed budget. After the public hearing, the Council may adopt the budget. Budget adoption must occur on or before June 30 for the new fiscal year per the Local Government Budget & Fiscal Control Act.
