Old Monroe Road Widening (U-4714) – Planning and development are underway to widen approximately 6.5 miles of East John Street and Old Monroe Road – from Trade Street to Wesley Chapel Stouts Road – in the towns of Matthews, Stallings and Indian Trail.

Proposed work would improve traffic flow, reduce travel delays, and allow for more vehicles to travel in the area. Bicyclists and pedestrians also would have accommodations along the project corridor.

Work would be divided into four sections:

  • Trade Street to I-485 (U-4714AA)
  • I-485 John Street interchange rebuild (U-4714 AB)
  • Morningside Meadow Lane to Wesley Chapel-Stouts Road in Indian Trail (U-4714B)
  • Between I-485 and Morningside Meadow Lane in Stallings (U-4714A)

Idlewild Road Widening (U-4913) – The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to modify the existing I-485 interchange with a “Diverging Diamond” interchange (DDI) and construct a roundabout at the intersection of Idlewild Road and Stallings Road, in Mecklenburg County.

The purpose of this project is to provide additional traffic carrying capacity along Idlewild Road, provide accommodations for bicycles and pedestrians, and provide improvements for the intersections at Stallings Road, Steven Mills Road, and the I-485 interchange.

Lawyers-Emerald Lake Roundabout (W-5710AA) – NCDOT will be installing a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Lawyers Road (SR 1004), Emerald Lake Drive, and Hawthorne Drive that includes pedestrian connections around each leg of the roundabout.

Update (09/11/2023): NCDOT has delayed construction of the Lawyers-Emerald Lakes roundabout to Summer 2024.

Update (06/07/2023)Due to a utility delay, the roundabout construction at Lawyers Road and Emerald Lake Drive/Hawthorne Drive has been delayed. Start date and road closures are to be determined.

Update (03/03/2023):  The roundabout at Lawyers and Emerald Lake has been suspended due to emergency service route complications. The roundabout at Lawyers and Mill Grove will continue as planned, with eight-twelve weeks of closure slated to begin on March 31st. The detour route provided by NCDOT can be seen below.

Update (03/01/2023): NCDOT is simultaneously constructing two roundabouts at the intersections of Lawyers Road and Emerald Lake Drive/Hawthorne Drive and Lawyers Road and Mill Grove Road. Beginning on March 13, 2023, NCDOT will be closing Lawyers Road at Emerald Lake Drive/Hawthorne Drive and Mill Grove Road. Residents and Businesses that are located within the segment of Lawyers Road from Emerald Lake Drive/Hawthorne Drive to Mill Grove Road will need to access their properties from Lawyers Road by way of Allen Black Road, Union Road, and Rock Hill Church Road.

Potter-Pleasant Plains Intersection Improvements – The NCDOT proposes to make intersection improvements to Pleasant Plains Road (SR 1364) at Potter Road (SR 1364) in Stallings (near the Citgo Station). Specifically, these improvements include left turn lanes and traffic signal modifications as well as curbs, gutters, and sidewalk connections.

I-485 Express Lanes (I-5507) – The I-485 Express Lanes project will add one express lane in each direction along I-485 between I-77 and U.S. 74 (Independence Boulevard), providing travel time reliability and improving traffic flow in this critical transportation corridor. The project will also add one general-purpose lane in each direction along I-485 between Rea Road and Providence Road.

In coordination with other projects in southern Mecklenburg County, this project will serve as part of a larger network of express lanes offering drivers the option of more reliable travel times.

To minimize the duration of construction along the project corridor, three other projects will also be built at the same time as the I-485 Express Lanes:

  • Ballantyne Commons Parkway bridge widening
  • New interchange at Weddington Road
  • John Street interchange improvements
